Nicholas County Inmate Population Search

The Nicholas County inmate population is tracked through West Virginia's regional jail and state corrections systems. A Nicholas County inmate search usually starts with the regional jail roster, then moves to state prison, court, federal, or immigration tools when the person is no longer in local jail custody. The Nicholas County inmate population includes people arrested locally and housed outside the county, so searchers need the right agency path before relying on a name result. The Nicholas County inmate population record trail also separates jail custody from formal court charges.

The Nicholas County Inmate Population

Nicholas County does not operate a stand-alone county jail with its own public roster. The working jail for Nicholas County arrests is Central Regional Jail and Correctional Facility, a West Virginia Division of Corrections and Rehabilitation facility in Sutton. The regional model matters because a sheriff arrest in Summersville, a city police arrest, or a state police arrest can lead to booking at a state-run regional jail. The jail count is not the same as a county jail headcount inside Nicholas County.

The county government's Nicholas County sheriff page is one local source for the sheriff's office and public contact path.

The screenshot supports the local office context, while custody lookup itself still routes through WVDCR because Central Regional Jail is state operated.

The Nicholas County inmate population therefore has several layers. Current jail custody is checked through the WV Regional Jail Offender Search and the Daily Incarcerations county view. Sentenced prison custody moves to the WVDCR prison and parole locator. Federal custody, ICE custody, and court records use separate tools. A name missing from one system may mean release, transfer, a spelling issue, a federal hold, or a court case that has not produced a public custody listing.

Nicholas County Inmate Population Statistics

The best sourced numbers are facility capacity and state prison custody by county. WVDCR's FY2025 Annual Report lists Central Regional Jail's rated population as 312. That is the facility's rated population for the eight-county regional jail, not a Nicholas County-only current population. The same annual report counted 112 Nicholas County prison offenders incarcerated by county around June 30, 2025. The Nicholas County Commission lists the county population as 24,169, which gives local scale without creating a jail rate that the research did not support.

Nicholas County Jail Custody Makeup

WVDCR describes Central Regional Jail as housing pretrial felons, pretrial misdemeanants, sentenced felons, and sentenced misdemeanants from Braxton, Calhoun, Clay, Gilmer, Lewis, Nicholas, Roane, and Webster Counties. The research did not locate a Nicholas-only split by sex, race, age, charge level, or average length of stay. The page should not imply those breakdowns exist when the public sources did not provide them.

  • Pretrial custody: People held before final case disposition may remain at Central Regional Jail while bond, hearings, and court dates proceed.
  • Sentenced jail custody: Some sentenced felony and misdemeanor inmates may be held in the regional jail system.
  • State prison custody: A Nicholas County prison sentence or active parole case belongs in the WVDCR prison and parole locator.
  • Other holds: A detainer from another county, parole office, federal agency, or immigration authority can affect release even when a local bond exists.

Laws for Nicholas County Jail Records

Public access turns on the type of record. Jail custody data comes from WVDCR systems and official disclaimers. Arrest reports, incident records, and some booking materials may require a request to the law-enforcement custodian. Court charges and dispositions must be checked through magistrate or circuit court records, because the jail search itself warns that sentencing information is not the underlying criminal action.

Key Statutes:

West Virginia Code Section 29B-1-3 gives a right to inspect or copy nonexempt public records, requires reasonably specific requests, and sets a five-business-day response path.

West Virginia Code Section 62-1-6a defines booking photographs and limits some law-enforcement social-media sharing for minor offenses.

West Virginia Code Section 50-4-2a addresses video initial appearances for detained regional-jail defendants and keeps the charging county important.

West Virginia Code Section 61-12-8 requires immediate reporting of deaths in public institutions and allows access to incarceration records for death investigations.

Nicholas County State Prison Population

The state prison count is separate from the regional jail roster. WVDCR operates prisons, regional jails, correctional centers, community corrections, juvenile facilities, youth reporting centers, and parole offices. No state prison was found inside Nicholas County. Once a Nicholas County defendant receives a prison sentence or falls under active WVDCR supervision, the better search path is the WVDCR prison and parole offender search, not the regional jail roster.

The prison locator accepts an Offender ID prefix or first and last names. Its scope is active supervision, prison, or parole. The official text also warns that people discharged or moved from WVDCR custody will not appear. That scope is why a person may vanish from the jail roster after transfer but still appear in the prison locator once the state record catches up.

Nicholas County Roster Search Fields

The regional jail search form is simple, but exact spelling still matters. The visible official fields show a required last-name path, an optional first-name field, and CAPTCHA. The Daily Incarcerations page is a separate county dropdown channel for recent daily custody activity, not a full case-history archive.

Nicholas County Inmate Record Details

CAPTCHA blocked direct inspection of live individual roster profiles during research, so only official visible fields and disclaimers should be described as confirmed. WVDCR's disclaimer references current location, release date, status, and sentencing information because those items may change quickly or may not be fully current. Charges and court action still need court verification.

Field / TopicWhat the official source supports
NameSearchable by last name, with optional first name.
Current locationReferenced in the disclaimer as fast-changing information.
Release date/statusReferenced in the disclaimer, with a warning that data can change quickly.
Sentencing informationMay appear, but the jail system is not the authority for the underlying criminal case.
MugshotNot confirmed from visible public research; booking-photo law affects social-media sharing and requests.

Past Nicholas County Inmate Records

A released person may not remain visible in the jail search. The research did not locate an official roster retention period or archive for Nicholas County releases. For older booking records, start with the correct custodian: WVDCR for regional jail custody records, the Nicholas County Sheriff's Department for sheriff-held arrest or incident records, and the court clerk for filed court documents. West Virginia FOIA requests must reasonably identify the records sought, and the custodian may respond with copies, an inspection time, or a written denial.

The sheriff's official sources list both a county commission office address at 449 Water Street, Suite 1, Summersville, and a sheriff website address at 700 Main Street, Suite 3, Summersville. The law-office number is (304) 872-7880. Dispatch at (304) 872-7814 should be treated as public-safety dispatch, not a casual research line.

Nicholas County Jail vs Prison Search

County jail custody, state prison custody, federal custody, and immigration custody are not interchangeable. A person arrested in Nicholas County may begin in the regional jail system, move to state prison after sentencing, or be affected by a federal or immigration hold. Each system has a different locator and a different record purpose.

Nicholas County Bond and Court Records

Jail status is not the same as the court record. Initial appearance, bond, charge filing, dismissal, indictment, and sentencing live in the court path. Magistrate Court handles many initial appearances, citations, misdemeanor matters, and preliminary felony steps. Circuit Court handles felony and higher-level records. The Nicholas County Prosecuting Attorney decides how criminal charges move after arrest.

The West Virginia Judiciary court-record access page is the official starting point for statewide circuit and magistrate search links.

West Virginia court record access page for Nicholas County jail arrest records

That court access path is separate from the jail roster, which is why a custody result should be checked against the case record before treating charges as final.

Detainer
A hold from another court or agency that can block release after local bond is posted.
Personal recognizance
Release based on a promise to appear, often with conditions.
Remand
A court order returning or keeping a person in custody.
Disposition
The outcome of a charge, such as guilty, dismissed, acquitted, or amended.

Nicholas County court lookups can start at the West Virginia Judiciary court-record access page. Specific document copies still route to the proper clerk when the online search does not supply the file.

Nicholas County Detention Facilities

The facility map resolved one detention facility page for this project. Central Regional Jail is the primary jail serving Nicholas County, even though it is located in Braxton County. No official source located a state prison, federal prison, ICE detention center, work-release annex, or sheriff-run jail physically inside Nicholas County.

Once a Nicholas County person is sentenced to a state prison term, the search path shifts from the regional jail roster to the WVDCR prison locator. Federal and immigration custody must be checked through BOP or ICE rather than the Nicholas County sheriff or the regional jail roster.
